I have a 1987 Arrow Glass Nova SS Bass Boat. I am 73 years old and thinking of getting winch. I have been manually loading this boat for 30 years+. I have been driving on the padded trailer. Information I have found says boat ways 930 pounds, 115hp engine 300 pounds?, 4 everystart batteries and a 20 gallon gas tank. Sometimes cannot drive all the way on. How does one determine what size winch to purchase? 2000lb, 3000lb etc.

I'm a firm believer in having more then needed is always good thing. In you case I don't see needing more then 2000 lb.

If your allowed in your area to drive your boat full ON (sounds like you are), maybe think about the auto lock in. You drive the boat up and as it comes to the hook it self latches.

Not recommending this one, just first one I found

Get the largest winch you can afford....

Electric winched are rated with an empty spool.....makes little sense since the pulling capacity can be reduced as much as 300% by the time all the cable is back on the winch

The spool getting fuller (requires more force for equal pull) isn't a big deal on a manual winch, you just crank harder.

With the fixed power of the electric motor, the motor continues to loads up as the spool increase in diameter to the point that the motor stalls and burns up.

Welcome to iBoats! :welcome:

A 2000# capacity winch should be fine, especially if you use slicker bunks. Remember, you are just pulling the boat onto the trailer, not lifting it.

It sounds like you are power loading. That can damage the ramp, and is discouraged, if not illegal, in many places.

Thanks guys for your help and the welcome. Just to explain. I have been power loading for over thirty years but have purposely kept power very low. This is the thought of getting electric winch. Have not tried to power all the way up the trailer.

Last year I backed in to load the boat and fell off the edge. Did a job on my axle. So, it was YOUUUU!

A few years before when I backed off the dock I actually hit the bottom and wrecked a prop. It was supposed to be deep water, but there was a shoal at the end of the dock. Was that YOU too???

Just as I suspected. The reason the pigs on the water are pigs because they don't give a $%^& about their fellow boaters because they think they own the place...

Ahhhh, the golden rule just isn't golden any more...

Thought you were posting in fun, so was I, but appears you might need to take a minute and relax.
