I can't find the ball size on this trailer.
It's a Caulkins, tandem axle, very heavy duty trailer. A 26' flybridge is sitting on it that I'm towing home in a few days.

I'm guessing a 2 5/16" ??

H.

Homerr,

The hitch may not have a ball size however it may have a class rating. I would guess this trailer is at least a class IV. That would be a 2 5/16" ball.

I hope you're not going to try and tow this with a car or 1/2 ton pickup. The 1/2 ton will pull it, but it won't stop it.

The 2 5/16" ball comes commonly with 6000 pound rating and a 10,000 pound cap. For this boat get the 10K rating and I second the previous post about what you tow with.

I towed the boat home today. I only went 10 miles. My 1/2 ton has plenty of power, but stopping it wasn't too good as I figured. I couldn't feel the trailer brakes kick in at all, but since it has been sitting for many years, it no doubt needs the brakes serviced.

I'm planning on either replacing my rear axle with a 3/4 ton axle of just buying a 3/4 ton or larger truck outright.

Problem is, my 1/2 ton truck's engine and running gear is almost new, and I hate to abandon it. I can turn the back of it into a 3/4 ton very easily, but the front wouldn't be cost effective.

How much would the 12" 3/4 ton brakes help in the back and 1/2 ton brakes in front?

This is on an F-Series Ford truck.

H.

You might want to check with the folks who bought Calkins. It's Carnai Trailers and they are based in Washington State. 509-228-9510. They have parts for most of the Calkins products.

Don't forget to check the specifications on the trailer coupler. It usually states the size of ball wether it be electric brakes or surge brakes. It also states tongue and gross trailer maximums for that coupler too.

Your second issue is stopping. Even with a 3/4 ton or bigger, if the trailer brakes are not working, you will have problems no matter what you drive. No trailer brakes could jack-knife a 1 ton almost as easy as a 1/2 ton in an emergency stop with a big trailer. Get the brakes serviced and enjoy the rest of the summer with one less worry.
