I am new to this forum, and I would like some advice. I bought a winter project boat (1968, ss 195, Slickcraft I/O) The motor and out drive are out of the boat. My question is what should I do or check while the engine is out? I will do a compression check, and look for seal leaks an that sort of thing, what else? I have never owned an I/O thus my knowledge is limited. The overall condition of the boat and related equipment appears to be good. I am open to any suggestions. The engine is a 6 cylinder chevy with a mercruiser outdrive. Thanks
Bill

Sit in the drivers seat and go VROOM VROOM then crawl down in there and knock and poke on all the wood framework and the transom looking for any problems with rot. It should have a ring in the knock test as compared to a thud.

Degrease and wash out the engine compartment.

Service and check out the drive along with changing out the bellows and perhaps the ujonts while you are there.
