Hey Everybody!

I just got my first outboard motor!

See my other post: http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=010624

I expect that the last post will be a tough one to answer, so I will wait on that one.

But I have another question, what should I do first to this motor?

I have never owned an outboard motor before and know NOTHING about them. This thing doesn't run but looks pretty clean. It is a Russian (it think) made Betepok 8. I assume that means 8hp and I would assume that it is a two-stroke...but I am not sure at all.

Could all of you motor GURU's gimme a hand. Things to check first. I don't even know what kind of oil, spark plugs and etc. to use? I know that it is kinda tough to answer without knowing anything about the engine, but I need a place to start.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!
:)

Re: What should I do first?

I clean the whole fuel system and put in new plugs and gas. Then I try to run it, and make sure the impeller is pumping water. I'd put new one in if you can find one. Then start checking compression, spark, fuel flow, etc, after it does not run

Re: What should I do first?

Thanks sho305,

This may sound dumb...but what is an impeller and what does it look like (Is that the propeller?).

As I said...I have never owned an outboard before so all this is very new to me.

Since this motor is a rare one (compared to Mercury or Evinrude etc.) I may have a hard time finding a manual for it. Do you think I should get a repair manual from another make? Would it help? Is there a generic book that would explain to me all my "Newbie" questions.

Thanks!
Petey
