I want to do the repair myself so will be getting a manual but please offer any advice.

I am having cooling system problems. It is a closed system.
gauge When the 150 guage indicates about 150 (guage 10 probably off by 10 degrees or so) then I can hear chirping noises which I assume is coming from the sea water pump because the engine goes on to overheat.

I recently changed the belt and heat exchanger cap and added fluid.

The only way to go for a manual is the OEM Volvo manuals.
For the engine, you need Volvo PN 7732007 for the drive, you need PN 7731624.

Don't assume anything on an engine or drive, it never works.
Do you have water hooked to the drive when you are running when the boat is out of the water?
How old is that raw water pump impeller? That is the first place to start looking for overheat problems. You might want to explain what your problems are, the OEM manuals are better than the after market ones, but if you expect them to have troubleshooting info, you're going to be disappointed.

Sorry, I am having troubles with the new forum. I did not know my post went in since I had received an error message . . . so I tried again.

And thanks for your response.

I am starting the engine in the water only. The impeller has not been changed in many years. My trust in the local mechanic has been destroyed so I can't be sure it was ever changed.

The first time it overheated, I had just gone out and was coming up to speed when I heard a couple of chirps and it blew out some coolant. I immediately shut it down and got a tow in. We did a compression test and it showed 150psi on all cylinders. Whew. The drive belt was stretched and shiny and the cap was loose so I replaced them. I overfilled the heat exchanger a bit.

Now, I start the engine and the chirping starts at about 150. The engine goes on to overheat. The engine has a slight roughness but I have not been able to get it out and run it to see if it smooths out. There are no other symptoms I have noticed.

I have checked with some other volvo dealers in the area and they do not stock parts for this engine. They will order for me but seems like I might as well order it myself. They seem to have some aversion to the "red engine." Can parts be bought on-line?

Any advice is appreciated and sorry about the duplicate posts.

That chirping could be the alternator belt, alternator, circulation pump, raw water pump, who knows, you will have to get in there and listen and see if you can identify what is causing the noise.
What does the temp go up to before you shut it off? Normal for those engines is 190°. If you overfill the reservoir, it will push some out, that's normal

When the temp rose over 200 I shut it off. I have always been diligent about watching it and it has never gone over 200 in all these years until this recent problem.

I have tried my best to identify the location of the sound and got others to try too. The sound is that side but of course the alternator is right next to it. I even got a hardwood stick and put it to my ear like my grandfather used to do. The pump sounded rough on the insides but since I never heard one otherwise I had nothing to compare to. I could not make any definitive decision about the chirp though. Lack of experience on my part, I guess.

I think I get your point though Don. I might have two problems and I will stay aware of that. I will make more of an effort to find the sound.

There is no doubt that I should inspect and probably replace the impeller anyway. Should I just go ahead? If there are other problems with the pump will they become obvious?

Thanks,

lbj

You might try removing the alternator belt and test running the engine to see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't go away, then it isn't the alternator, the belt, or the engine circulation water pump. If the noise does go away, then feel the condition of the alternator and circulation pump.
It would also be a good idea to pull the raw water pump and check the drive coupling for the pump. They are rubber and do come apart.
