What sealant for fuel tank fittings?

What do I seal a poly fuel tank with? For threaded fittings? Any urethane or teflon tape or rector seal are the things coming to mind? For saltwater use and fittings are aluminum. I'd think rector seal would pass as its safe for LP, but so is the yellow teflon tape(or is it pink?)

Thanks, gotta seal a few fittings and then put on a sending unit that needs to be waterproof(it has a gasket too...)

Permatex #2 never fails.

Jeff, Those fittings are usually tapered. They usually don't need any sealant. Permetex #2 is gas soluble, and therefore unsuitable. Be real careful the teflon tape doesn't clog the fuel line.

Been a long time since I used #2 but I thought it said it was fuel/heat/and oil resistant. Used it on engines in a lotta places for a lotta years.

I disagree about pipe fittings not needing a sealant. Seems every time I connect one and don't use some they leak. Course sometimes I'm working hydraulic circuits with 2000# of pressure. I wouldn't want my fuel lines of all things to have a chance of leaking.

Go to the auto parts store and ask them!

I can't remember where I saw it, but I've seen Loctite 592 pipe sealant with Teflon recommended as the sealant for gas line fittings. It's designed for tapered fittings, and is gas/oil proof. And it won't dissolve and clog parts like the teflon tape. Comes in a tube for about $12, and is a whitish paste.

Sure teflon tape will clog your fuel lines.
If not applied correctly.
When placing the tape, place it on the threads only, not hanging over the end of the fitting where there are no threads to seal.

Correct, and use the yellow tape.

I have never seen yellow tape so I had to look it up. Did you know..........

WHITE-Single density- should only be used on NPT threads up to 3/8 inch.
YELLOW- Double Density- yellow double density is often labeled as "Gas type"
RED-Triple Density: (Note-the container is red but the tape itself appears as a pale pink color). Presently required on all joints ?" diameter or greater.
GREEN- Oil Free PTFE tape- Required for use on all lines conveying oxygen (I.E. ?medical oxygen or welding oxygen lines).
COPPER COLOR- contains granules of copper and is to be used as a thread lubricant but is not approved as a thread sealant. (Generally it is used as a thread lubricant on bolts or pipe threads for mechanical applications where no physical seal is required.)
