I just bought a new Suzuki 40 hp 4 stroke outboard for my 17' aluminum bass tracker. The prop that the told me to use when I bought it was a 12 pitch. This got me out of the hole quick and it ran out real good at about 6,200 rpm WOT.
I just put on a new stainless steel prop from the same place I just bought the motor. This time they told me that I need a 15 pitch for the combo im running. I got out on the lake today, and at WOT I got around 4,800rpm to 5,000 rpm, and the low end is GONE! it's a dog getting up on plane.
should I go back with the 12 pitch or 13, 14???? I need imput on this before im stuck with a $265.00 mistake? (my top end doesn't seem any faster like they said it would be)
Thanks for any imput,
Suzuki40

The rpm range for that outboard is 5200-5800. Anything below or above that at WOT and you could be doing engine damage.

The 15 is too much prop and the 12 is not enough. The 14 will probably put you in the lower limits of the rpm range and possibly give you the most top speed. But the 13 is probably optimal with a best combination of holeshot and top end. I'd go with a 13 stainless. ;)

I agree. With the numbers you posted the 13" should put you in the sweet spot.

Have you changed the number of blades or the diameter, or just the pitch?
