Hi, I just bought a 1986 Renken with a 4.3 OMC and want to know what outdrive I have. It does not say cobra on it, but it looks like it has been painted. The number on the top of the engine is GM 6269732.
The plate on the outdrive has 2 #s. The first is 984210, the 2nd is 404396. I want to know what service manual I should buy for this model.

Thanks,
Telluride

I can't find anything with those numbers but a quick way to tell if it's aCobra or a Stringer is look at the drive, the Cobra will have 2 hydraulic trim rams one on each side of the drive (similar to Mercs). If it's a stringer it will have a big black rubber boot seal going all the way around the drive.

Don S. Will the 4.3L mean it's a Cobra ?I don't think the stringer used this V6.We do see one customer who actually has a Renken or Renker (sp) with a 1987 3L stringer drive.Runs us ragged everytime he needs parts, until we realize this.

DHP

Thanks for the help guys. It is a stringer. I found a site that said they made a 4.3 stringer in 85 and 86. Now what version is it. I thought that the 400 series was for 4 cylinder and the 800 was 8 cylinder. What does that make mine?

i'm not sure to be honest i've never seen one but i would assume 1. lower gearcase is the same as 800
2. upper gearcase is the same as 800 but may have a different gear ratio the last omc 800 series manual should be avaiable from ken cook or one of the fix every omc ever made may have info you are after

IT could easily be a 1985 OMC in your 1986 boat. It's not uncommon to see the previous year motor in a boat depending on when the the boat was built and what engine inventory the dealer has laying around. Go to this site for an exploded parts view of the 4.3 in 1985. OMC Parts Diagrams

The 400 was only(to my limited knowledge) used with the 4 cylinders. V-6 and up got the 800.
