I'm sure this has been asked a million times but can't see anything about it lately. I'm about to change oil in my 2005 90hp johnson 4-stroke and I see buying it from a dealer which is the Johnson brand is $10 per quart, and I will need 6 quarts. Is it safe to use an automotive brand and if so what brand and what weight of oil? Thanks for any help.

Re: What oil to use?

If you check your owners manual I believe you will find that FC-W oil is recommended. FC-W is made for Four Cycle-Water cooled motors like yours. There are several brands, although none will be as cheap as regular motor oil. All motors pushing boats run at higher loads than automobiles. You therefore need better oil.

From Suzuki's website:
The actual oil recommendation is: SAE or NMMA FC-W 10W-40 (operating in temps from 14 degrees to over 100 degrees F) or 10W-30 (operating in temps from -4 degrees to 86 degrees F) API or NMMA FC-W Classification SE,SF,SG,SJ. For temps below -15 degrees F use SAE or NMMA FC-W 5W-30.
