I was just at a local tournament and guys were talking about a AMS-OIL semi synthetic that they were running in their Mercs, I have a 99 Yamy Vmax 150 and she likes to smoke a little on start up, is anyone using anything but the Yamaha oil?

Any TC-W3 oil is appropriate for your outboard. AMSOIL is infamous for bogus claims. NOT recommended here.

Re: What oil do you use in your Yamaha 2-stroke

I just recently bought two gallons of Pennzoil XLF that I'm switching over to as soon as my oil tank is empty. I run a Yamaha 225. I asked a lot of questions and did a lot of research before deciding to make the switch. It's a lot cheaper ($14.00) a gallon at WalMart and is a TC-W3 oil. I ran the really cheap WalMart brand 2 stroke oil in a brand new 200 HP Mercury I had on my first boat and never had a single problem with it.

Re: What oil do you use in your Yamaha 2-stroke

I've run WalMart outboard motor oil in a 1990 SeaDoo PWC and a 1985 Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke motor, and they both continue to run great. The last time I cleaned the head on the SeaDoo, it was completely clean (without carbon.) As long as the oil meets the industry standards, I'll keep on using it.

If I ever went to an Optimax or other modern injected 2 stroke outboard, I would use the factory oil as long as it was in factory warranty. I assume some of these use semi-synthetic's and/or full synthetics. Then, I would probably switch to one of the big name oils--Pennzoil, etc. Luckily, WalMart also sells most brands of premium and factory oils at prices much lower than boat dealerships.

I'm running a Yamaha FX Cruiser PWC this year, and I found that WalMart also sells Yamaha outboard oil filters that also fit their PWC's. My local motorcycle/PWC dealership charges 150% of list price, and they wanted a small fortune for a filter. I'm running motorcycle oil in its dry sump--pretty expensive stuff.

Whenever the Yamie 115 gives up the ghost, we plan on replacing it with a modern 4 stroke and a new pontoon boat. I just wonder how long it'll run?

hey quick question, i have the same yamaha motor on my boat, and i was wondering if you still put oil in the gas since its a 2 stroke, or do u just add it to the tank on the motor itself? this is my first time with a motor over 25 hp, so im just wanting to make sure i dont screw anything up.

The oil is added one way or the other, not both unless you are in the engine break in period.

100% tcw3 full synthetic pennzoil. The best oil i have used as far as way less smoke and seems to burn cleaner+biodegradable.Any oil will work though.I have used the walmart brand forever till i switched over to the full synthetic and i will never go back to reg oil.Not that it's bad i just like the way it runs cleaner and idles way better, plus way less smoke if almost any at all.

I was advised by my mechanic to use the Mercury or Evinrude xd-50 and NOT the Yamalube due to excessive carbon build up with Yamalube. I was sceptible so I researched it quite a bit on the internet and lots of people seem to be reporting excessive carbon buildup.

My 2nd on what boater 1234 says about the Pennzoil 100% Synthetic, costs more but less smoke, carbon. Good Luck!
