If my manual calls for 86 octane fuel or 90 "RON".

I'm not sure what "RON" stands for, so I'm guessing that doesn't apply.

Anyway, I have been running 89 octane in the boat, am I waisting money? 87 is my other option. The previous owner said he only ran 91 octane through it.

I have rebuilt the motor and gone 30 over all around on cylinders/pistons if that matters. All else is stock!

Completely. In any motor, you should always run the lowest octane the manufacturer recommends. Running anything higher than that will only make your engine run WORSE, and you're completely throwing your money away.

Re: what octane

Since all you did was go .30 over, 87 octane will be fine..

Re: what octane

RON means Research Octane Number, the method used in most other countries.

90 RON is about 86 octane by our method.

Therefore 87 octane is just fine.
