Re: What Octane

Now I bet I will be over ruled on this, but based on my years of working with all type of gas engines, including 7 boats, I have never found a great deal of difference in fuel octane. The quality of the gas is more important then octane unless you are running 1500 + above sea level. Even then, an octane booster is a better value then 15 - 30 cents over regular fuel. According to a study in car and driver several years ago, no noticable difference was found in normal operation between regular and higher octane fuels.

It would be my choice to use regular, clean the fuel lines, and replace all filters and put the cash back in your pocket. But as I said, I bet someone will over rule me on this point.

that motor will run fine on 87 octane. no need for mid grades or premium. you wont see any difference.
use regular unleaded and ring free.

Whoa!! That's a high compression EFI four stroke, guys.

Reel poor, you need to read your owner's manual. Most of the EFI four strokes I have run into ask for not less than 87 octane, but use premium if available.

Yamaha may not do it like Suzuki, but the Suzi ECM monitors for knock and retards the ignition timing, but makes more power on premium by advancing the timing.

If the Yammy is the same it will run fine on 87 and better on 91-93.

I don't have an owners manual. This is a borrowd boat and the owner is a newbie to boat ownership. It was bought as a salvage boat. We filled it up with premium and was just wondering what Yamaha recommended.

What's Ring Free?

Re: What Octane

ring free is a techclholene additive made by chevron. aids in keeping carbon down. the f225 is a low compression machine and will eat all the 87 octane you can feed it. make sure its propped to turn above 5500 RPM at WOT.
the f225 does not use a knock sensor.
