Hey folks,

I just did the upper mounts and a new water pump the job went swimmingly well on my '74 Evinrude 9.9. I took the boat out to a local lake. ran great in the low medium and high speed. after a couple hours of rippin around the lake I noticed this. I did pull the prop to wipe some grease on the shaft check the seal, all looked good.

Any help it doesn't look like the usual exhaust drool.

Hows your spark plugs look?
If you havent used it in a while it might of just being some extra drool having being worked loose from the exhaust housing

Bosunmate,

The new NGK plugs were just installed, they only have about 2 hours of running on them. As said before the upper mounts were just replaced. I did do a good cleaning in the exhaust housing and the gear case area.

Re: What now????

It's tough to tell from your picture (too small) but it looks a lot like unburnt oil/gas mixed with exhaust water. I would have thought it would come out the center of your prop and not the edges but in any event I wouldn't worry about it. You could unscrew you lower unit drain plug and see if some water flows out. Let the motor sit for a day or two to ensure any water that might be in there unmixes and moves to the bottom of the lower unit.

nwcove Lee Roys ramblings said that these motors may run better with the NGK BR6HS. Thats what the local Canadian tire has plenty of and is right handy to my house. Yes the '74 has thru prop exhaust. I will edit my pictures for better viewing.

Re: What now????

Optsyeagle I will edit my pictures for better viewing,I am thinking of dropping the drain plug and give a good spray with some brake cleaner and refill with oil. Then take for another trip to the lake.

Re: What now????

Where are you spraying the break cleaner? My suggestion was simply to confirm whether water was getting in. If it was, then maybe oil is getting out. As I said, I think it is probably just unburnt exhaust crud, and that is normal. Usually it will flow out the inside of the prop but it drips out of other spots as well.
