Re: What Motor Size?
I believe the G3 was built for modest HP --about 40. The 15 inch transom was a reason for the low rating. I was a young motorhead when the G3 was built (late '50s - early '60s if I remember correctly) so back then I knew all the specs-- now, memory is not so sure.
The jackplate is good, but as long as you are rebuilding the transom, I personally would build it up 5 inches to avoid the extra weight of the jackplate.
With proper transom reinforcement I think she could handle a 60-65 HP. After all, she was designed to be a cute, quick boat.
As a comparison, I have an old 14 foot flat bottom that looks similar to the G3. With 65 HP it goes 45 and with 90 HP it goes 55 plus.
Stern weight will be an issue with this boat: remember, you are sitting near the stern and a 60 HP with power trim will weigh a bit. Remember: you have a light, stern heavy boat with a fairly wide, flat bow. Bow lift at higher speeds may become an issue. for the first few runs and until you get comfortable with her handling, build up your speed slowly and be alert for instability. With this boat, I would constantly wear my PFD, and a functioning deadman engine kill switch is a MUST.
But she is a sweet looking hull and a great Sunday ride. Good luck with her.
