What mercury do I have?

I just got a new mercury motor but am unsure of what hp and year it is? I couldn't find the serial number? I found one number on the motor itself T380 tecumseh 70019009. There was this number stamped on the back of the motor 3b 211353. The case says 9.9 but the person I bought it from said it was not the original and he thought the motor was bigger than 9.9. Any ideas on the numbers I gave? I would guess 80's from the looks but I have no idea.

After some more research I think it is a 86 or 87. I used 3b 211353 and the b211353 came up for those two years, how do I know for sure what the HP is, like i stated the guy said he was for sure it was not the original. were the 9.9 and 20hp both be the same size cover. The cover on it now says 9.9

Looks like a Montgomery Wards/Sears Game fisher with mercury decals. The Model you have was rated to make 15hp.............realisticly it was more like nine.

Take a pic with the cowl off and post it.

I agree, that's not a Mercury. Sears, Gamefisher is more like it.

Thanks for the help...I dont have any real boat motor knowledge per say...just trying to figure out what I have???

what HP is it then? and what would the value be on this motor in running condition....i imagine parts are going to be hard to find

My guess would be a mid 70's Sears given the engine tag. I have no idea what year the Mercury decals are from.

The decals are from the 86 - 90 Merc's. I did find a picture of your engine with the original decals though.

THANKS!!! Can I assume mine is a 1979 15hp like the pic 70Merc80 posted? And is there a way to figure out the serial number so I can order parts for it?

I hope this engine is reliable, I had a Mercury 6hp before and wanted a little bigger one and was glad to find what I thought was another smaller Merc.

The only thing reliable in the boating world is a "canoe and a paddle"..............My customers hate it when I tell them that.

went to the lake to try it out....... i have to pump the primer bulb 2-3 times every 10-15 sec to keep it going if i dont keep it pumped it will die. I put on a brand new tank and fuel lines with a new primer bulb. I did have the tank vented as well. Any ideas?

If the fuel line goes straight from the cowl to the carb you have a ruptured fuel pump diaphram. It is located in the flange of the carb. You will have to remove the carburetor to access it.

??? I would go get my money back from the dude that sold you a motor claiming it was something else. Thats far from a merc... parts and quality...

I haven't bought it yet...It is a friends that was given to him, he told me to try it out and see. He said he has no idea on the history of it he said he would want a max of $50....... when I got home i put it into a barrell and it will seem to keep the prime now at low and high for the most part....it will stay running all the time unless I go from full throttle for a few minutes then back to idle it will spit and sputter then quit and needs to be re primed.


can anybody tell me the part number I would need for a new fuel pump if I buy the motor

might have go back to the merc 6hp............

when trying to find out why the primer bulb looses pressure. when I took it out of the tank and squeezed the primer gas would come out of the lower unit this is when the engine was not running? what is that a sign of?

Going to take the fuel pump off tomorrow.... will there be a part number on it

Fuel pump................ It is common after they have been setting to work and then fail.

$50 is not bad.

Find a fuel pump and continue on.

Edit....I spent some time looking for a pump diaphram and was un successful. It is possible to adapt a fuel pump from a small omc but may not be worth the trouble.

tore it apart...and there was a huge spit down the side of the piece.... I happen to have found one in town this morning does it matter what way it goes back in. The rectangular insert vertically or horizontally?
