Re: what line should i use.

Line has become really complicated over the last few years. With it boiling down to three basic catagories, mono, braid, fluorocarbon. If you are just starting using a baitcaster what I tell evryone is until you learn to cast with it use mono, it's the cheapest. Next I would study all three and determine which one fits your presentations and the water you fish.
Now that was the long answer. For a short answer myself on topwater I use mono and everything else I use fluorocarbon. On occasion if I am in some really narley stuff I will use braid.

I like berkely fireline in around a 6# test. But anything will do. I use the fireline because it rarely breaks off like mono but it casts like a dream. I use spinning reels, not baitcasters.

I also like a line with no stretch for topwater. Helps "me" with my presentation.

Zebco Omniflex Mono. About 6 - 10 lb. depending on your needs. It's tough as rawhide, casts good and is cheap. I have never really noticed a down side to it.

brand is ur choice, i like berkly but if im in a pinch ill go with something cheap as long as its fluorocarbon. i use six to ten lb in open water. if in open water where i know theres not a lot of vegetation and theres norther pike or musky when i fish for bass i tend to go 2lbs bigger than normal or if there is a lot of vegetation.

6lb open water if fish are smaller than five lbs with little to moderate cover
8lb in moderate cover if im fishing fro surface to cover
10-12lb or even 15lb if fishing heavy cover and or heavy fish
breaded fishing on ice tip ups, cat fishing, carp fishing (or in real low visibility)
or when going through super thick cover or super monster fish

i cheat when i fly fish and use fly line the attach a breaded line with a loop to florocarbon line instead of tipit since i snag a lot in all the debris in the water and its faster to fix and retie (im using more streamers and wolly bugers) and the floro breaks before the breaded does

sry its long but this is what i do. hope it helps?

Braid is also good for deep-diving crank baits as well. There is less resistance and float than with flouro or mono which will allow deeper, longer running lures with each cast. Tight lines!

ya since its thiner = less resistance plus less back lash and twisting. when u buy 20lb braided its more like 25 or so in strenght

I've been using Berk Tracerbraid in 30# lately with a fluro leader coupled with an inline swivel. I use Berk Vanish leader material usually in 10-20# and this combo has been working great for me. The initial cost is a little high but Tracerbraid lasts really long and when my leader gets nicked up I just replace it. I usually run about 36" of leader in this setup and it is pretty versatile.
