I have a 1996 5.0 FL volvo model #502APHVE. The thermostat appears to be permantly cast into, and a permant part of, the top of the thermostat housing, it is not located as usually seen, between the upper and lower housings. The seloc manual shows all volvo v-8s with the thermostat located between the upper housing and the lower mounting surface. The seloc manual also shows all thermostat housings mounted directly to the top on the intake manifold. My thermostat housing is mounted to an elbow that mounts to the front of the manifold. ???

There is a rubber oring that holds the thermostat up inside the housing. Remove the oring and it will come out.
Get an OEM manual instead of those "almost a manual" type books and it would have explained it. Ever wonder how many other mistakes are in that Seloc? :%
Also look at your model number I think you will find it's an HU, not HV.

Thanks Don.
There is a flat rubber washer that is between the circumference of the thermostat and the housing casting. The casting covers the edges of the rubber washer. It's flat not round like an O ring. How do I get it out and then reinstall?
Am still trying to figure out which volvo manuals I need. You're right about the "almost a manuals".

Use a knife blade, an awl, or some other type pick to pull that oring out of the groove, then the thermostat will come out. Maybe a little rust holding it, but it will come out. Volvo and OMC call the ring an oring, and I'm sure that's what it is if it was OEM. Hard to say what a previous owner used or an aftermarket thermostat kit might have.
Check with your local Volvo dealer do order the manuals. There are a lot of manuals in the set for the HU models (1995, not 1996 as you said, the boat might be a 96 but the engine package is 95)

The 4 manuals out of the set of 7 that you need are (these are Volvo PN's)

Fuel Systems manual-7788858
Ignition Manual-7788857
Engine manual-7788856
SX style Sterndrive manual-7788851 or SP/DP style 7731624

I did as you said and sure enough the flat washer came our as a nice round O ring! Now how do I get back in and seated properly?
Will check the model number again and theserial number to check if a '95.
Can't wait to get the manuals. Thank you so much!d:)

You actually have an OMC number there, and I can't help you with it, But go to the link below.
http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E
Under products, click on sterndrive, then 96 and look for your model number..... Won't find it.
Now, look under 95....................
That 96 in your serial numbe is just a coincidence.

As usual, you're right again. Strange that a high volume manufacture, Four Winns, should put a '95 engine in a boat made in June '96. The hoses are also all stamped '95.
The manuals are ordered and can't wait to get them.
Thanks again for all your help!

Nope, not strange at all.

They tend to order large numbers of engines and drives to have on hand, so that as hulls are completed they are not waiting around for engines and drive to be delivered.

Or merc (or VP) has extras of "Last Years" modle on hand and offers a discount on them to clear thier stock.

Your situation is very normal.

Cars and trucks used to be the same way, before EPA emmission certifications.

I quess so but it would be nice if the manufacture labled the engine year on the boat. I now have a collection of spares for the wrong year engine.
