What kind of oil?

I just purchased a Lowe Roughneck with a '99 Johnson 50hp. This is the first outboard I've owned with oil injection. Is there a certain type of 2-stroke oil I have to use with this engine? Also, is it possible to do away with the injection system entirely and just pre-mix? Or should I stick with the injection and just add a little oil to the gas for extra assurance? Thanks.

Re: What kind of oil?

Any TC-W3 rated oil will do just fine, cutloose. I use SuperTech (from WalMart).

The first time you run it use the oiler but also use 50:1 premix. That will allow you to safely test the oiler. Just measure how much oil it has used and the amount of fuel you have burned. If it uses about a pint to a 6 gallon tank you are okay. Running the engine for one tank on the equivalent of 25:1 will do it no harm. If the oiler is working okay you can use straight 87 octane unleaded regular in the tank after that.

You can disable the auto oiler and many do, but others take advantage of the convenience. Check the Engine FAQs for articles on why and how.

Good luck. :)

Re: What kind of oil?

The boat is about 8 years old and I'll bet the remote oil tank and filter has never been cleaned. I would strongly suggest you do that. When finished add fresh oil of your choice, disconnect the oil line at the engine and squeeze the bulb to get oil that far up the line. Reconnect it and as was suggested, mark the oil level on the tank and add oil to the fuel tank (1 pint per six gallons) and then run about six gallons. Check the oil level in the oil tank. If it used about a pint you are good to go. If not, disable the system and pre-mix.

A new thermostat and water pump impeller would also be a good idea as you have no idea if those have ever been changed.

Thanks a lot for all the good advice fellas. There's only one boat shop around here and he'd probably charge for the advise that you guys gave me. Thanks again.
