Howdy all,

I have an 87 FourWinns 211 Liberator with a 460 Ford V-8 engine. (King Cobra) The OMC service manual suggests straight 30wt oil and even says multi-grade oils are not recommended. Does anybody know why they might suggest to NOT use multi-grade oils? Even Ford suggests 5W-30/10W-30 in the 460 in most automotive applications. I was planning to use Shell Rotella 5w-40 synthetic. Maybe over kill but I use it in everything else.

I know oil threads can get pretty emotional but I cannot see any reason for using straight weight oils in anything these days.

Thanks,

Rick

Re: What kind of oil to use

I was going to point to a post that covered this in DETAIL, but the search function seems to be dead. Is this because of the recent problems with the site being down? (The search page comes up, but seems to be unable to find any old posts).

If and when if works again do a search and you will find a LOT of info.

Emotional? No, you're kidding! :D

Boat engines operated different than automotive engines. That is the reason OMC, Mercruiser, and Volvo all have specs other than automotive.

Since OMC no longer exists and hasn't for many years, don't expect to see any new information from them. Below is a copy of the NEW Mercruiser spec for oil, and Volvo is basically like Merc.

BUT, in reallity, if you change your oil at least once every 100 hours or once a year and run your boat at rpm's of other than wide open throttle then about any oil will work. Besides, there isn't anyone here doing any oil comparison checks, they just say "_________ type oil works for me", and trust me, about every type oil out there is used for boats.
