I have been fishn' off a peir now for a few years and recently got a boat, my peir setup is great and am just looking to have a heavier setup for goin out in the boat catchen the big ones. My question is what kinda line i.e. mono, braid...? do you all use for a setup w 50+ test line. thanks

Re: what kind of line?

People tend to way over size their tackle based on the belief that heavier is better.

What kind of fish are you chasing? What reel are you using?

Re: what kind of line?

We like 20# on spinning reel trolling for dolphin, sailfish, and bottom fishing for smaller grouper and snapper. We like 30# on a Penn Senator for large dolphin or small wahoo if they are in the area. But for the big ones, like big wahoo or marlin, we like 50# on a Penn International 50. For swardfish or big grouper we use 80# on Penn 80...... but I would prefer using the anchor winch with chain.

I also prefer the 20# range. Lighter tackle seems to make it more fun. I also like the braided stuff. Took a while to get used to it, and had to learn some new methods for tying, but I like the thin diameter which allows for more on a spool.

it really comes down to where you fish, and what are you looking to catch?

Re: what kind of line?

i havent decided what kind of reel or poll to use yet, but i would be using it primarily in the Puget sound, and i amost always use live bait or if desperite frozen herring. we are usually going for shark, but occasionally hook something a lot bigger but its always broken the line (40lb braid) before we get a chance to see what it is.
