What kind of lure were you using? What was the rod weight? (using a light rod with a Texas rigged worm will have the same undesired results as a bad hook)

All my trebles are Triple Grippers. My worm and fluke hooks are Gamakatsu and I use HP hooks on tube baits.

spots

Re: What kind of hooks??

I have had pretty good luck with Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp hooks. I lose lots of hooks because I fish live bait in the brush piles and fallen trees so I try to stay with the cheaper hooks that I don't have to send away for.

Gamakatsu. I've had real good luck with them. They last a long time for me.

You didnt mention what weight of line or what type, but the 7 MH rod may be the problem unless youre flipping. A bit shorter MH rod may be better, you can actually whip a better hookset with a shorter rod, anyway, thats my opinion. Hooksets will be much better with a braided line also, or at least A 14# Mono. 14# MOno may not be an option for 1/8 weighted lures though.

As to hooks, the thinner the wire the better the penetration. You need a very tough wire though or it can actually defeat your purpose by flexing. I see very little if any difference between the Gamagatsu hooks and the Eagleclaw

Bass have some very tough spots in there mouths, I cant count the times I have brought a Bass in and had the point of the hook just sitting there on a hard spot with no penetration at all having done everything right.

Its all on the learning curve!

Re: What kind of hooks??

I use Gamakatsu G-Loks 3/0 - 5/0 and Mustad Mega-Lites in 4/0 for tubes. Before I ever set foot on the boat I check each hook for sharpness. I then put 10 hooks into a fleece lined little pouch so they don't get near anything else. I keep that little pouch in my vest pocket. It's a hook holder for fly fishing.
The hook set you are doing may be the culprit also. Try this next time. Sweep the rod back instead of lifting up on the rod like a jig set. Then as soon as you feel the fish, stop and hold the rod firmly about 3' off the surface and let the fish turn back. Then pull back in a sweeping motion and start reeling slowly. The closer the bass gets to you the closer your rod tip should be to the surface. This keeps them from jumping and head shaking. Remember, the bass has engulfed your bait and it can be sitting in any position in his mouth. So by doing this kind of sweeping motion around you instead of raring back over your head, you are going to put the hook in a better position for hanging into flesh, instead of the bony top of his mouth. Plus, by letting the fish turn and pull on the line, it drives the hook deeper. I have landed 1000's of fish this way and it works much better. Remember, it is a smooth sweeping motion, not a snap and reel motion.
I have landed 2 fish over 8# without having them raise a ruckus. I just slowly reeled the line in and the fish came with it. When they saw the boat, they started to fight, but I just lifted them up and out of the water onto the side of the boat and they immediatley stopped. I hope you try this technique and give us a report. Using a stiffer line can help some too, such as Stren Big Game. Very little stretch and it won't fray and cut on every little twig.
Good luck

Re: What kind of hooks??

I use 17lb fluorcarbon p-line the flurocarbon lets me get away with the sinker size, just takes more patience, skeeter that hook set sounds like what i do on acarolina rig,i usually set the hook different on differnt species, you made me relize something in your post the way i set the hook on a c rig and the way i set on a texas are close ,i do a slow sweeping or a hard jaw dropping on both ,it depends on the strusture that im fishing, but the lakes i was fishing was alot of spots and thats a different hook set, thanks i understand whats happening .
