I have a 1981 Johnson 140hp engine that I want to replace. I'm told that today's engines are rated at the prop instead of the head (as was my engine). Can someone tell me what size engine in today's market would give me the same power as my 1981 model. I use the engine to fish and waterski. I use the moter to push a bass boat. The boat comes out of the hole fast and runs at about 50 mph.

Howdy Happy. I believe that OMC went to rating at the prop in '77 or '78. If I am correct you just need another 140.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

OMC went to propshaft ratings in 1985. The new looper V4's make more torque than the cross flows so whichever one you choose I think you will be very happy with. The 60 degree is lighter than the 90 degree if thats a concern.

Good luck!
