What is this?

Just a WAG, but is this the water fuel separator?

And either way, is there something inside here like a filter I should change?

My boat is just coming out of a 15 year indoor storage, and I JUST finished rebuilding the outdrive. So now my focus is turning to fuel delivery and the undoubted gumminess contained within. Just need some rough idea other than replacing fuel lines where I should be focusing my attention?

Thank you.

Yep, that be the trim pump. There isn't a filter in there but being that old, it would be a good idea to remove, empty, flush and refill with 10w30 oil.

Ah, that's very different LOL.
Thanks guys.

I'll have to venture out to the boat again now that I'm switching focus and see if this even has one. it is a 1986 so I'm not too sure. Other than replacing all fuel lines and cleaning the carb and changing a filter if I can find one, is that about all for old gummy fuel problems? I haven't verified ANYTHING, I've been busily rebuilding that stern drive, so I'm just now opening up the fuel can of worms. It may be perfect (wishful thinking I'm sure) and fire right up, who knows.

Thanks guys, I see mine is the new design (there's a FIRST!) as the pump is facing down. So, probably replace the line from the pump to the carb and the filter in the carb and good to go? Hopefully? I should probably take the carb off and at minimal dowse it in some carb cleaner, or better to soak it overnight?

Most likely change the oil, filter, maybe plugs, wires and cap. God this is adding up :-/

does the trim work?, does the motor (engine) run? as Dodge suggested... 30wt oil will do the job, dont buy "hydrolic oil", that's 30 wt oil too :).. good luck

if it's been sitting for 15 years, i'd change the plugs, wires, (everything) that's going to have points, get new points, get the kit for that engine...15 year old gas sitting in tank??..... after you changed everything, including pumping out the old gas..... see if it fires up...... if it actually starts with 15 years of sitting, not putting on new parts.. I'd be shocked.... the carb needs a good cleaning for sure...

Ok, I see now it's a steel line to the carb, I had seen what is the vent line and thought that was the fuel line.

Yes, trim works.

Merc carb, thanks for filter links I will get those right now, at the very least.

Definitely change the fuel in the tank. It is not gas any more! Pump it out and steam clean the tank if possible, but for sure pump it out and refill with fresh premium and a double dose of sea foam or equivalent.

Thank you, yes, we've pumped out the tank, about 10 gal. Going to use the good fuel going forward, don't even know for sure what they used back then, but erring on the cautious side.
Thank you for the tips I'm learning a lot

Sea Foam sounds perfect, thanks for the tip!

Oh, and no we haven't tried starting her yet. We spun her over briefly just to make sure she wasn't seized, but didn't want to attempt starting her with all that nasty "gas" in there.

Since it doesn't look like you currently have a fuel water separator, it would be a good idea to install one. They can be mounted in a variety of places - adds another layer to filtering to keep your engine happy. ;)

when you change out all the parts,, you will probably have to pour a little gas in the carb bowl to get it rumbling.. your fuel pump is likely manual working on vacuum... unless it's running the fuel wont move much.... ie- prime it.. put the cig out first!!

Once you are done with this list you should be able to make some noise on muffs.
AH, just figured out multi quote LOL.
YES!!! That's the intention! Get those new filters in and try in ernst to get her popping.
