What is this?

1987 Mercury 90hp

I am Trying to fix a tach issue and found this....
It looks like it goes between the stator and the switch box. (rev limit?)
There is nothing like it in my shop manual.

that is a voltage suppressor. It is part of the red stator kit, it has nothing to do with your tach, either your tach or your rectifier is at falt. With your engine running you should have 9 volts on the grey wire, be sure you disconnect the grey from the tach, red lead to grey. black lead to ground.
