What is this?

Ok, friends I am new to these old motors and I do not know what this is. I am working with a 1957 evinrude 35hp. Thanks.

That is a vacuum-operated safety switch. If the engine over revs, or 'runs away' the extra vacuum pulls this switch closed, grounding the coils, thereby shutting down the engine.

At least, I think that's how it works

Now you know about that switch, So here is the rest of the story, Buy some 2 x 8's and make room around the house for outboard stands,, there is no going back, It is an addiction stronger than any known drug, there is No rehab or cure available! only the fix...one more just oneeeeeeeee more...so sad,,,,,

Thanks guys. Just picked up this motor a few weeks ago and there are no wire and the vaccum hose is cut. The picture wasn't mine.

The switch cuts out ONE cylinder only to lower the RPM - it doesn't shut the motor off.
