What is this?

Can anyone tell me what this hole is for? Oil leaks out and water leaks in. Not good. Is the hole necessary or can I plug it? There are other similar holes but they all have a solid bottom. Could this hole be for some type of freeze plug. I'm at a loss as it is not mentioned in my manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: What is this?

Kinda looks like a perfectly round hole. Don't you think it might be a drain hole?

Leave it alone.

looks like a hole caused by a flaw in the aluminum casting and corrosion. If oil leaks out and water leaks in, then I would say plug it with JB Weld or a screw or another method. Good luck!

Re: What is this?

What motor is it. It looks like the hole is just under the impeller and is probably a drain hole to allow the water to drain out of the water pump when the motor is removed from the water. If that is the case, you certainly do not want to plug it.

The hole in the pic is on a 1974 25 hp Evinrude. If it is for draining the water pump why would oil come out of it?

Check your Gear oil condition. If it is not milky, and I suspect not, leave the hole alone.

It is likely the water drain to reduce the chance of freeze damage. The oil would be unspent oil from the fuel mix collecting in the exhaust cavity area..........where the hole is.

Amen. Why does everybody want to plug up all the drain holes??

When I serviced the engine lower end the gear oil was very milky. However the fill and drain plugs were loose and had not had new washers in some time. I got the motor from my father and it had not been run in several years. I serviced the gear oil, installed a new impeller and installed a tell-tail. The motor starts and runs well in a barrel. It was after running in a barrel that I noticed the oily water running out of the weep hole.

I believe you are correct. I am going to put my boat in a nearby lake and run it around for a bit. Then I am going to change the gear oil again and see if there is water in it. If no then I'm good to go. If so then I'll need to rebuild the gear box and install all new seals.

I want to thank everyone for their help and the good ideas. Thanks again everyone!

Re: What is this?

What does the oil smell like ??
Black and smells of gas = unburnt 2 stroke oil.
Smells of rotten eggs = lower unit oil.
Looks like a drain hole to me.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: What is this?

If you were running it in a barrel you'll get much more oily residue buildup than if you were running it in open water. You won't notice nearly as much.
