First off, its a part on a normal Alpha 1 generation II trans. Its the sensors that control how far up and down the cylinders can bring the transom.

My issue here is, I need to know how to set them now that I took them off and stupidly didn't mark them and even more stupidly started playing around with them by rotating the sensors. I think its all out of wack now..

Re: What is this part called?

post this over in the mercruiser repair section and you'll get more response proly.
The adjustment procedures are in the manual if you can find access for one. Do a search and you will find links. One side is the trim limit switch and the other side is the trim position sender. Be careful not to damage the wires, on the older ones they get brittle and break and are difficult to replace.

PORT side is the trim limit switch, here are the adjustment instructions:
1-place drive in full down/in position
2-align index marks on switch
(small tic mark on star gear must align with mark on caseing underside)
3-install trim limit switch and secure
to adjust:
4-loosen screws and turn clockwise to end of slots
5-ensure drive is trimmed fully down/in
6-trim drive up/out (*DO NOT USE TRAILER SWITCH*)
7-slowly turn trim limit switch counter clockwise until trim cylinders extend to specified length

early alph 1/r/mr models: 21 3/4in max.
alpha 1 gen 2 models: 20 3/4in max.
bravo models: 21 3/4in max.

8-tighten screws when adjustment is correct (center to center measurement from mounting points of trim cylinders.
assure full function of trim switches and trailer switch in applicable. full up should result in the specified measurement.

the STARBOARD side is the trim position sensor, install instructions:
1-turn ignition to "on" position (do not start boat!)
2-with drive in full down/in position, rotate sender until needle reads at bottom arc of gague.
3-tighten screws

trim up and assure proper gague readings.

hope this helps
