I have a 1996 3.0LX in this boat. Been having carb issues, so I replaced it with a Rochester rebuilt carb. Got it on, tried starting but it just wanted to keep back firing and when I did get it started once it didnt last long as it ran so rough. So I kept trying to get it started with tweaks to the carb until the engine started making a noise I didnt think sounded right...

What kind of trouble do you think I am in? :/

may have removed some of the ring gear teeth or damaged the bendix drive. need to pull the starter and inspect.

Sounds like a bad starter, I would remove and inspect.

Not to sure with that engines starter, but as long as you have the room in the bilge should just be unhooking wires, removing a few bolts and pulling it out. It's pretty straight forward, the pain in the butt is usually caused by lack of room to work in.

Yea, its not recommended but thats how the boat came and I have seen it on other boats before. What makes it really so bad?

Sounds like some starter work is in your future........................ Your setup looks pretty easy to get to starter. You should see mine.. I dread the idea.

Since the line from the pump to the carb / FI is pressureized, rubber hose between fuel pump and carb is actually a no-no in the boating world, as a very small chafe on the hose could created a tiny leak you won't see, but still put fumes in the bilge. BOOM. If flex line is absolutely a must, then S/S braided fuel line hose w/ AN fittings should be used.

Best practices dictate rigid fuel line from pump to carb. If fuel injected, then ABSOLUTELY rigid line.

From that shakey video, looks like the "flexible fuel line" that has been mentioned is the fuel pump vent hose to the carb that lets you see if the pump diaphram is leaking. That hose is correct as it is. Of course, yours should be changed, because you can't see thru the yellow hose and it's probably hard as a rock. Mine was the same and I changed it

Well that greenish hose is the vent hose and actually pretty clear/flexible. I plan to get the starter off tomorrow to see how it looks. Still have no idea why it would backfire so much.

I pulled the starter. Teeth on it look fine. Not sure how I can turn the big gear to inspect all its teeth but not sure what I should be looking for...

Ill post a video later of it all, see if anyone can spot anything. In the mean time, any tips would be helpful.

Lay the starter on the ground, take a batt and set of jumper cables and touch the contacts on the starter. The gear on the starter should pop out, as to engage the flywheel, spin like a sumbch, and then snap back when you take the power away WARNING!!! The starter is a strong little motor,, watch your hands, the kids , the dog!. If the starter still makes that wierd sound, at least you will know what it is. To inspect the teeth on the flywheel , put a socket and breaker bar on the front pulley crankshaft nut and turn the engine over by hand WARNING... be sure the key in in the off position so the motor doesn't start. You may need an inspection mirror and a flashlight.. You are looking for mangled/ missing teeth. make sure the flywheel is tight, that you cant wiggle it by hand... Same with starter gear.

In my opinion you have messed up your starter.. The only time i have ever heard a starter free spin like that the bushings were shot.. that happens from holding the key in the start position to long.. which you did do in the one video i seen.. way to long.. I think you will find that you will be putting a new start in your boat..

The big gear is your flywheel, use a socket on the front pulley/balencer and a log ratchet or breaker bar to rotate the drive shaft, as you do the fly wheel will turn and you will be able to inspect it's teeth. They shoul come to a point but not be sharp, you will be able to tell if they are damaged.

Do as already suggested above connecting the starter to a battery to test it or take to an Autozone or O'Rilly's to have it tested.

The back firing could be a timing issue, you need a timing light to check. Or it could be because the carb is running to rich or lean and you will need to adjus the idler screw or needles.

Thanks for all the help guys. It was the starter. Bench tested it, making that weird noise and also not even popping out. Just ordered a new one.
