What is the "proper" sealant to use around oil seals

I am trying to finish off a rebuild of the lower unit for my old 1956 Evinrude Fastwin 15. I have gotten the new seal kit from Sierra and have *finally* gotten the old seals out (that took some work). I am ready to install the new seals, but I know that I am supposed to use some sealant around them to help seal. I have seen a myriad of different topics that sort of touch on this subject (ie. silicon or not-to silicon) but can't seem to find the right thread to answer this question.

So, the question again is what is the proper sealant to use when installing new seals on the lower unit, including the spaghetti seal?

Thanks!

I am not sure if the pros would agree with me, but I have had the best success in using Permatex? MotoSeal? 1 Ultimate Gasket Maker Grey. It resists gasoline and with 2 cycles in particular that seems to be an issue.

The question was for the "proper" sealant. The answer is OMC/BRP gasket sealant around the seal OD. And 3M #847 on the spagetti seal. The part number for gasket sealant is 317201 and #847 is 776964.

That said, few people are going to buy the "proper" stuff for just one job. So do whatever seems right to you. The world won't end if you do.
