Man, I have had allot of questions. You haven't let me down yet. I love web forums.

Upon inspection of my recent purchase I have found the following:

1) There are about 4 studs that come out of the top of the motor that appear to be for holding on a cover over the flywheel. On mine, three of them were very loose and the fourth has no nut at all. I tightened the three and will find a nut for the fourth.

2) What is that cover that has about four, raised holes in it with some sort of rubber gasket on the outer edge that covers the carbs. Mine is not attached at all, although it appears that several bolts are supposed to hold it on. There also appears to be the reminants of a gasket between the carbs and this thing. So, what is it, do I need to replace the gasket before I snug it down, does it really need to be bolted?

3. How is the reverse lock suppose to be engaged/disengaged on my motor. I am familiar with an old Envinrude that had an aluminum lever mounted just below the cowl facing the passenger area. It had a steel cable attached to the locking mechanism. Flip in to one side, and the cable would activate lock mode, etc... On this Merc, I can't really see in there very good, but it appears it might too have an attachment for a cable, but no such thing is there. When I lower the motor, the two hooks do hook over the trim pin, but it doesn't really lock. I just pull on the lower unit to raise the motor again. Any diagrams or explanations of how this is suppose to function.

Thanks again.

i can answer number 3 for you

when you shift into reverse, it closes onto the pin so that the motor doesnt raise up when giving it throttle, to unlock it, simply shift into "forward".. it will still be locked when in nuetral

Scroll down towards the bottom of this old thread to find a description of how the reverse locks work.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=010967;p=1#000011

There is a small spring on the rod holding the hooks which keeps them pulled down. The hooks will be over the tilt rod when in forward but they don't have enough tension on them to lock. If you are not locking in neutral and reverse your reverse lock cam may be worn or in the wrong position.

What you described as a cover in front of the carbs is the air silencer. I'd recommend putting new gaskets in it. There should be a decal on it some where warning not to run the engine without it. Running without it could cause a lean fuel/air mixture and a damaged engine.

c/6
Hooty

So this is the air silencer?

It also has a black cover that bolts over top of this to completely cover the carb area. The piece pictured above is the piece that doesn't have any bolts holding it on, although it looks like it should have bolts just above and to the right of the top carb and just below and to the left of the bottom one. So, I should buy a new gasket that goes between this and the carbs and find bolts to hold this piece tight?

Thanks everyone.
