what is the diffenes in a rectifier and a voltage regulator? does the rectifier have anything to do with a rpm gauge? or does the voltage regulator have something to do with the rpm gauge? if the rectifier is bad will the rpm gauge not work? or if the voltage regulator is bad will it make the rpm gauge not work? so what does make the rpm gauge work?

Re: what is the diffents in a rectifier and a voltage regulator?

The rectifier changes stator a/c voltage to d/c voltage. The regulator ,regulates the voltage output of the d/c voltage. On most later model John/Rude outboards the voltage regulator or rec/reg supplies a source to the tachometer. In short ,a malfuntioning tach is one symptom of a failing reg/rec.Check battery terminal voltage with and without the engine running and see if it is 1 to 2 volts higher with the engine running at 1500 to 2000 rpms.If your boat is equipped with an operating volt meter, you can watch it during the test.

What year and hp engine are we discussing?

my motor is 1983 jonhson 150hp. v6 outboard motor. could it be the rectifier make the rpm gauge not work? or is it the voltage regulator makeing the rpm gauge not work ? everthing on the motor runns and sounds good. only thing not working is the rpm gauge.

According to my sources ,your engine is equipped with a combination reg/rec as one unit.Conduct the output test and it will determine whether the reg/rec is your tach problem or the tach is simply defective. The gray wire exiting the reg/rec unit is what supplies the tach.

the gray wire is it on the rectifier? my rectifier has 3 wires 1 wire is red,1 wire is yellow. 1 wire is yellow with gray stripe. or what gray wire you talking about?

what do i use to check the batterys voltage? should the voltage be higher with the motor running?

Voltage should read higher with the engine running. You can use a hand held analog volt meter or observe the boats volt meter(if equipped.)Running the engine at 1500-2000 rpms ,you should see between 13-14 volts .Any lower than 12.5 volts and your reg/rec is not putting out.

The voltage regulator is a silver metal unit about 3 inches long with heat sink fins and wires. It is mounted to the engine block.
