Its hit or miss as to whether my lights will work reliably or not. My current light flood and drain through big holes no water stays in the fixture. However the contacts crud up and the lights get dimmer all the time.

Is there a truly sealed light out there that stays dry?

Hi, BJM.

I have seen several boat trailers on the highway with the new LED lights. Big price, but bigger improvement. You can see them from a mile behind, just like the 18 wheelers.

Good luck. :)

Dido The L.E.D lights are bomb proof but are expensive. But worth the cost of not having to unplug lights when having to put boat in the water. Plus the last forever I mean won't burn out for a long long time. And Use very little power. Have a couple in my anchor light and driving lights. Now I never have to worry about a blown bulb or dead battery. Plus they look cool. :D

Hello BJM,
You can pick up a decent set of brake/tail/sidemarker lights that are waterproof from Wal-mart or other places. They aren't that expensived and seem to hold up well enough.

Good luck :)

The sweet thing about LED's is that you will get away without having to change your flasher. They draw 10% of what an incandescent bulb draws....
:)

LEDs are definately the stuff. They give you a good blink blink blink too instead of that weak fade on off stuff when you're signalling.

I have sealed lights on my trailer (incandescent). They don't get wet inside but once the bulb burns out they're junk.

I have the sealed oval shaped tailights that mount flush with the trailer and I have not one problem in 14 years.

I don't think sealed is the best approach, since the lamp assys must stay sealed, or all bets are off. I've had Dry Launch trailer lights on the same EZ Loader for over 20 years, never have had to even change a lamp after 100's of salt water trips. These lamps are not very expensive [<$20 each] and use a very simple principle [imagine an upside down glass]. Zero maintenance and always work, what more can you ask!

As I mentioned in another thread. LED's can be had a lot cheaper at truck parts houses than at marine oufits. Same lights.

put a smear of 'aluminum wire oxydation compound' on the builb end & the socket..
don't need much ... can buy it at any hardware store.. for a couple bux for a lifetime supply..

i flat-out gaurentee you'll never have that problem again....

Re: What is the best type of trailer light

I will have to look into the LED idea. I take they are sealed up and won't corrode? I really like the idea of distinct blinking. I definitely have the fade on and off deal now, sometimes I have to look pretty hard to see they are in fact blinking.

Does anyone have success with different wire types? I don't go in salt water but I find the wire insulation breaks down anyway.

I have found that by using axle grease on the bulb socket, that you do not have the corrosion problem. I seal everything with clear silicon. I put new bulbs in every spring and don't have to worry about them. I never unplug my lights in water.
Just my .02 worth.

LED's are coming but for me still cost too much. I have DRY LAUNCH on my trailer, about $15 each. My 1980 trailer has had one bad bulb but only taked about 2 minutes to change and requires no tools. Did have one whole light go bad but due to young man with a BB gun. I never unplug light and they make nice guide lights at night.
