What is the Actual Maximum Hull Rating?

I have a 1985 17' Critchfield Marine Center Console. When I bought the boat, the center console had a sticker on it with "Maximum Hull Ratings" from USCG; I recently found out that the center console IS NOT the original to the vessel, and the ratings on the sticker are from another vessel. The manufacturer of my boat is no longer in business, how can i find out what my "Maximum Hull Ratings" are?

Question for you - was that center console just a replacement or was it once a bow rider - or whatever - stripped down with the console added?

It was originally a Center Console Vessel. for some reason the original owner (not the person I bought it from) replaced the center console (I think it has more storage than the original.) so the vessel layout has not changed just has a different center console.

From what you're saying I don't think it's gonna' happen. Just being really nosey but why do you need these number's? Personal info or insurance, registration stuff?

I am repowering the boat, I was going by the sticker thinking it was my maximum hp rating, and i found out it is incorrect. I just dont want to over power the vessel.

Below is a link to the USCG regs applicable to manufacturers for calculating maximum horsepower capacity for outboard boats. Just work through the formula for your type of hull and you should be able to answer your question.

Thanks!! That is a Great piece of information! The sticker on my boat shows max hp rating of 115, the true rating is 150hp! I also need to figure out maximum passengers as well, Can you tell me where i can get a copy of that book? Thanks again

Here's the link to the entire USCG regs. You have to know the maximum weight capacity before you can determine the maximum number of passengers. Try sections 183.35, then 183.41. However, you will need a new capacity plate reflecting the correct limits for your boat because any agency that inspects your boat is going to use whatever is displayed. In the event of an accident involving damage to property, injuries or worse; prosecutors and lawyers may look even deeper into these issues. Stay safe!
