What is spray deflector (PART# 3345776) MADE OF?

2003 Johnson 175 Looper.

PART# 345776

Purchased boat used and the spray deflector's paint was all chipped off and the dit started to rust. I purchased a brand new one and it came in vlack color (not painted I don't think). Feels pretty light, so believe it is made of Aluminum, but want to be sure before I paint it.

I have zinc phosphate primer (omc), OMC white paint to match and OMC clear coat to put on top of it.
Figure I would sand it, prime it lightly, then paint and clear coat.

if Al, should I use some kind of acid on it to etch (like vinegar)?


Any advice appreciated.

I think you have an extra 3 at the beginning of your part number. 0345776 is the number for most spray deflectors.

I will check the one on my motor in the morning and get back to you, but if the finish on the new part is good, I would sand it very lightly but thoroughly and then go straight to the white paint.

The black does not feel like primer, almost like it is baked on.

Mine is made of aluminum but it is not the same shape as the one on yours. I still would it expect it to be aluminum, maybe it is anodized.

So should I scuff, hit with zinc phosphate, then topcoat ( I also bought clear just in case)?

Found out it is either aluminum or more likely magnesium (from the guys inmy machineshop at work). They tell me it is powder coated in black so no paint over it (won't stick).

I ordered from an online vendor by part#. Does anyone know if these can be spec'd in a different part # absed on color or a special designation for color.

Anyone have white they want to trade for black?

Afraid it the black will look bad on an all white engine

Very unlikely that it is magnesium; it would not last a month in the water bolted to an aluminum motor. I think that it is made of the same aluminum alloy as most of the rest of the midsection.

Mine is painted Evinrude metallic dark blue.
