What is safe mode??

I see in several different places "safe mode" mentioned. It will limit rpm and timing to save the engine so you can limp back in. How?? On a carb 98 200sws, how does it limit rpm? I cant find info or specifics anywhere. Does it shut down cylinders randomly? Or 2 cyls permanently? My S200TXRW is missing on #2 & #5. I cant figure out why and am starting to think it may be in safe mode...Please help...

If it goes into safe mode it will also give you an alarm.
