What is My Gear Oil Telling Me?

I put full synthetic Sierra gear oil in my lower unit last fall. This past spring I began my boating season in mid-April and proceeded to put 240 hours on the motor until I winterized her today. While draining the gear oil, I noticed that the stuff coming out of the drain hole was not 'milky', but is was cloudy. Sierra gear oil is an olive green fresh. My 240 hour old oil came out a cloudy/lighter shade of the same green. So my question is, was this due to just use or rather water infiltration? Had no evidence of water in there otherwise.

check the reccomended service intraval for your gearcase and you may find the answer, I belive 240 hours is way longer than honda reccomends.

Re: What is My Gear Oil Telling Me?

Thanks. I wasn't too concerned during the season as 95% of my hours were trolling. But point well taken.
