I purchased an outboard late last year and I was told it was a 1989 2hp 2 stroke Mariner. The entire motor has been painted covering over all logos.

Here is the information listed on a plate on the mount:

Model: 2M
Code: 6A1
Serial: 135369

So I posted on the Mariner board to verify the year.

This is what I was told:

So I thought I was all set. I started to tinker with the motor. The first thing I did was set it up in a drum of water to see if I could get it running. It started right up. I did notice right away that there was no water telltale. I immediately shut it down and looked for a telltale. I could not find one so I posted again on the Mariner board.

This is where things got confusing. I was told several things:

00135369 1989 MARINER 2 MH
-
- It is probable that this motor does not have a telltale.
- I was given a link to a Mercury parts website. On that site I entered the serial#. The site then returns a parts list and diagrams for what certainly looks like my motor. But, it also returns a model# that does not match the one on the motor.
- I was told that the motor could have been made by Tohatsu.
That engine number sounds more like a Tohatsu serial number. If I was you I'd post in the Tohatsu forum for "internetoutboard" he's the resident Tohatsu guru!! Hope this helps
