We have a 17' 1972 Glastron Tri-hull with a 1988 Johnson 150GT outboard. We are working with our mechanic to determine the best prop for this boat. We do little pulling of wakeboards and tubes, but will mostly be just cruising the lake and some fishing. Any suggestions?

wrj

Re: What is best prop for my boat?

Let me guess, you have a Glastron Swinger V-176? (spiffy '70's name isn't it? I think the I/O version was a V-177)

We had the same boat, same year. We went through a Chrysler 120, Merc 140, and finally a Johnson 200. (It was slightly more than the 140 HP recommended! What a rocket it was!)

To answer your question, the best choice would be a stainless 3 blade. Ours had a 19" pitch, as I recall. It doesn't sound like you'll be demanding too much of the boat for holeshot and top end,so if you don't need max performance, you'll probably do just fine with aluminum or composite. Pick the pitch that puts you in the top end of the max rev range with a light load.

Re: What is best prop for my boat?

I checked the current prop that the shop loaned to us to test. Its a 14 1/2 x 19 aluminum. The maximum we got was 40mph at 4700 rpm's. He's not happy with the rpm's and based on what I've read here its still way too low. Any suggestions?
