I know I will probably get varied opinions in response to this question but what are the pros and cons of Mercury, Evinrude, Nissan, etc. motors for a 14ft jon boat set up for bass fishing. Meaning, with my buddy, batteries and tackle, there will be some weight in the boat. Trolling is not a consideration but getting across the lake or down the river before the sun sets is.

I want manual start and the most quality and dependability for the money. ok guys, what is it and where can I get it at a reasonable price in SE North Carolina?

You opinions are greatly appreciated.

I have a 1995 Mercury 15 hp outboard with manual start. After 7 seasons, no problems. I change the spark plugs and lower gearcase lube once a year and that's it. Stay away from Johnson/Evinrude-OMC junk !!!

Hi Tarheel

You didn't say whether you're buying a new or used motor.

If you're buying used, then I recommend you do the following;

1. Look around your local boat dealers / repair shops and/or parts suppliers to see what brands they specialise in. Identify which of these you would want to deal with and then you will know what brand(s) will be best for you.

2. Find an engine of the brand you're looking for which looks like it's been well looked after during it's lifetime. Check compression & plugs, hear it running and if you can get a sea trial that's even better. Make sure the cooling water is circulating well too.

As far as new engines go, if you stick with the major engine brands like Mercury, Mariner, Johnson, Evinrude etc you can't go too far wrong.

Nissan (or Tohatsu which is the same engine) is a good value for money, reliable, well performing proposition if you have parts & dealer support in your area. I recommend you look at the recent posts on Tohatsu to find out more about this one.

If you're looking in the 15 to 20hp range, then I recommend 20hp. Nobody regrets having extra power. Make sure you compare the relative weights of the engines too. Nissan/Tohatsu is the lightest I think.

Good luck!

I've had both OMC and Mercury engines large and small. They are both excellent engines as far as I"m concerned. Properly maintained they will last a long time. 62_KIWI is right on in his post. I'd say buy the engine that will give you the most dealer support for your area and buy as many h.p.'s as you can afford. I have a Merc 25 now and love it!!! I've had Johnyrude 25's also and loved them too.
