L-Drive in an Inboard/Outboard version of the straight outboard motor. Hence, the "L" shaped drive assembly.

It will look like an I/O, no motor hanging off of the transom, just an outdrive!

If you can't find any parts or a mechanic willing to work on it, you've got one.

Re: What is an "L" Drive?

L drive is essentially an outboard motor hidden inside the boat. Its a very simple design. Easy to work on, light weight and fun to drive.... However they only made them 3 years so parts are getting more expensive and some are hard to find.

you can tell you have one if you have to mix your gas with 2 stroke oil and your lower unit come straight through the bottom of the boat instead of the back

plus it will say L drive on it lol

Thanks for the education. I have a regular o/b so I don't have to worry. I had just seen several posts referencing the "L" drives and I was not sure. Again, thanks.

Rosco's first picture looks almost identical to your picture. All really great pictures! I couldn't find any pictures taken of an outdrive of a L-Drive Boat online. I was going to post one too!
