What is an L-drive?

I am looking at a 1990 Bayliner I/O 90hp with L-drive. The outdrive appears to pivot up and down in front of the transom area on the keel. Is this correct? Never seen one before. Do they still make this, and is it more prone to problems than a stern drive? When it is trailered, the outdrive seems awful close to the ground, about a foot or so and I am concerned with it hitting the ground leaving gas stations, or speed bumps. Has anyone had these kind of problems? Also I am wondering about the 90hp if it will be enough to pull a skier out of the water with 5 or 6 people in the boat. Beautiful boat, looks like it just came of the show floor, low hrs, stored in doors, he is asking $55oo. What am I getting myself into here?

The idea was great but didn't last long. Not sure but you may have a hard time with parts now. Call a local Bayliner dealer and check that out.
90 HP may be on the small side for those larger loads. check www.nadaguides.com for value.

Re: What is an L-drive?

It was the worst idea anyone came up with ing the history of boating. I had a boat with a 120 hp L-drive and it made me think that boating was not fun. I had it for 3 years and only had it in the water for one. I would stay away from L-drives at all cost. An other problem is when your tilt goes out you are screwed. you cant get it on the trailer or close to shore. sorry to sound so negetive but many of my friends that got stuck with those bayliners feel the same way.
Matt

If you are looking for a nice low buget ski bot i would look around for either an older Jester or a Tahiti. 1970 and up. most of the boats like that are well powered, cheap and reliable.

please don't buy the L-drive.
have fun
Matt

Don't do it. You can get allot more boat for less $$$. If you have not had much boating experience, get some water time BEFORE you buy. If you are not sure how, where to get it wet, come to Vegas and I'll take you out, got 4 boats for different purposes.
