what is a stator used for im a new boater

any help would be great im not getting spark on my 50 h.p merc 1974 and i have bin told to look at the stator what is it used for and how can i check it

It's a coil under the flywheel,part of the ignition circuit. I'm not familiar with Merc engines so thats all I can say, sorry.<br />Dave

If your serious about checking the stator, get a shop manual.
