what is a MerCathode controller ?

1995 305 mercruiser alpha one gen II have a boz back on the bilge area I think is called MerCathode controller what is that for thanks?

Galvanic corrosion. It helps with the phenomenon of water passing around metal corroding it away....

Part of the electrical corrosion control device. Have a look at section 7 of the OEM drive manual #14

mercathode is to aid in marine corrosion inhibition.

it works in conjunction with anodes by attracting stray current in the water surrounding the boat

the mercathode "box" mounted on the engine is blue with four wires connected to it

Actually, it sets up a current that is the exact opposite of the current that induces galvanic corrosion. Its not attracting stray currents at all.

Yessir. + current. It's very improtant to hook it directly to the battery and not thru a battery switch. When your boat is in the water you want the mercathode powered up.
