I just purchased an 89 55hp Johnson commercial outboard. It doesn't have electric start but has a "lighting coil". Will it charge batteries? How many amps? How to hook it up?

Re: What is a lighting coil?

Typically a lighting coil is used exactly for that (lighting). It usually is an a/c voltage output somewhere around 13-18volts. The frequency and voltage of this output will vary with engine speed. You can put a regulator rectifier on this output and use it to power small accessories or charge the battery. I can't tell you the exact output for your engine, but 4 -6 amps would be common. ;)
