I have a 94 Loadrite trailer and I want to upgrade the tires on it. I was thinking of using Goodyear Marathon radials, but Loadrite says that if the trailer came with bias ply you should stick with that. So what is a good brand of bias ply?? Most are made in China and it is hard to guage quality. New Loadrite and Venture trailers come with Load Star bias plys. Any ideas??

Well this isn't the answer to your question BUT my motorcycle owners manual stated radials were unsafe for it 9following advice on a bbs) I upgraded to radials and it has NEVER rode or handled better. My trailers (both boat and flatbed) said the same, I upgraded and again big improvment. I belive alot of it is a legality thing (alot of people change tires one at a time and it is BAD to mix a radial and a bias) also if they recomend a radial I'm sure someone will ask (in court after a blowout on factory tires) "well why did you not build the trailer with these better tires you recomend"?.

Just my expearance and thoughts on the matter.

General tires seem to be what the farmers in my area buy. Most swear bye bias for durability and safety.I have seen radial tires blow out from being overloaded, when the steel belts snap and come out the sidewall.Granted the ones I saw where not load rated for trailers.Radial tires are quiter, and smother, but unless you can find some made for trailers I'd stick with bias for safety.

Jim

Stay with name brand (Goodyear/General).

Radial or no, make sure they are ST (special trailer) rated. There IS a difference.

Titan ST. Highest load ratings in the industry. Most sizes are 6-ply. Made in USA. They make bias-ply but I would go with radials. Just be sure you get at least as much load rating as required. Or just get load E's and enjoy the feeling of having the very best.

Forgot Titan. Good brand. ;)

Some folks swear at Carlisle, some swear by them. Your choice.

LouC I wouldn't give you a plug nickel for a set of Generals. My boat trailer had them on it and they were the sorriest tires I ever had. They had flat spots every weekend. I pulled every weekend anywhere from 30 mile to 200 and it never changed until I got rid of them. I have a 97 van that came with Generals and only got 5000 miles before I had to replace one. 15000 more and I had to replace all. Every one I have talked to in Oklahoma that has run Generals on their trailer or vehicle so far has had the same problem.
I would stay with a major brand though.

I think it depend on who you talk to. There is some discussion on here about Carlise. Thats what I have on mine now and also on an enclosed utiliy trailer that I pull frequently with about 8000lbs of books and I don't have a problem. They have been on the utility trailer for 3 years with no problems. Some say they do. Other post say Goodyear is bad.

By the way they are radials. The dealer told me they run cooler than bias.

I have Goodyear Marathons on my trailer, great tire, no problems. Probably the only tire made by Goodyear that isn't garbage.

I had carlisle until a blowout 3 weeks ago. I wouldn't use them again if they were free. I'm trying a set of coopers radial trailer tires. I have had good luck with cooper car and truck tires and the price was better than the Goodyears. FYI Cooper is a American company and I believe the tires are made in the USA.

I second the Carlisle tire sentiment. I had 2 on my trailer, lots of tread.

Noticed tread separating on one and replaced it. 1 day later on a trip the other blew out big time. Don't feel good about 2 out of 2 tires going bad at the same time while there was a lot of tread left.

i have a 21 ft,bow rider i/o that has a single axle trailer.put on 2 new titans bias ply and it handles like a dream now.stopped all the swaying that i was getting with the radials.i was told that radials were meant for soft suspensions, not like a trailer.i believe transport trailers for mobile homes use bias also.oh well!

My 2cents if you have a tandem axle trailer with that boat you can use almost anything for tires but with a single axle you are close to max weight so use good bias ply trailer tires.
