Hello all. I have a late 70's early 80's 70hp evinrude outboard with power trim/tilt and controls that I would like to sell. I do have relatives that would like to buy it and I would like to ask a fair price. Can anybody out there tell me what would be a fair price for this?? The motor is in great shape and starts right up. I don't want to gouge them but I'm not willing to give it away either.

thanks

I have seen those motors sell for $1000 or around that neighborhood. It depends a lot on condition. Having the power trim is a big bonus in my opinion.

$3-400 if used only in fresh water, $50-100 if used at all in salt. Nothing unique about these motors, and it is 30 years old, or so ...;)

Alot depends on where you are located, Around here that motor could sell for anywhere between $400 and $1000. Power tilt and trim will and to the price.

It s worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. Condition is vital to value.
Time of year, location, demand will all make a difference.

That questions comes up a lot. It's kinda like saying " I don't feel like looking outside so tell me if it's raining at your house". Unless you live next door it has no relevance. You will get answers from $400 to $1500. It's best to look at CL or local marine stores and see what they are going for. An when you post a for sale pic make sure the motor is mounted on a stand and is clean . Don't know how many pics I see that the motor is laying in the yard with a "runs great" caption. Also make sure that all the wiring is good an it can be started. If a seller tell me it runs great but needs X and Y to start then it does not run great and I offer parts prices.

If it were me, it'd depend on how well I like the relative. Not knowing the year may imply not much work/time/care put into it, thus something may go afoul on their maiden voyage with a 30 yr old engine & you could end up in the family doghouse for quite a while. Those engines were real work horses and have a good life span, however, when they go, they go. Why not let them make an offer & if it's over $400 (as is), take it?

I picked up my 83 115hp w/ PTT & rebuilt powerhead for $600
(oh, and entire year of use with NO maintenance on the thing)

...its the most I have EVER paid for a motor.

In Columbus, Ohio $500.00-$700.00. I own an '81 70 hp Johnson with manual tilt that runs great & has been maintained it's entire life & that's what I figure mine is worth.

selling it with the controls is a bonus; as they get older they are harder to match up. And when there are gremlins, they can start in the controls as well.
But I can't see the rig going for more than $500.

You don't see many used ones unless they are attached to a boat. Often the boat is worth little or nothing.

(I replaced a 1988 70 with a 1987 recently--had to buy the boat and trailer, too. $900 for the rig.)

Re: what is a fair price for 70hp evinrude motor??

I got a '76 Johnson 85hp for $300 with controls. No power trim/tilt. Took it to a mechanic, had 150 compression on all 4 cylinders and just needed the carbs re-done, said it was a great motor for the year.
So for $300 I thought I got a steal, but after another $375 to have carbs re-built, I guess it's still not bad under $700.

Go price a new one and anything up to 1000.00 is a steal (depending on condition). Even if you have to bore it, new pistons and reed valve (2000.00 if you have it done), you're still coming out ahead and basically have a new motor! I was lucky, picked mine up with controls for 100.00! I did have to take it off the old scow though, but it was worth it!
