Need to put an outboard on an aluminum boat with the following specs:
14' long
175 lbs total weight
16" transom
62" beam
Max HP: 25

Primary use will be to travel on some bigger lakes 10 miles or less with 2 guys and gear totaling no more than 700lbs. Primary concerns are managable travel times, and power if caught out on windy (wavey) days.

Any help is appreciated....

Thanks

Re: What hp for my boat?

I have found that most planing hulls perform well with anything over 70% of the rated max hp.

That means anything over 18hp, with 20hp being a more practical number.

Differences in cost, economy and weight between 20 and 25hp engines being trivial, I would go with a 25hp.

Good luck. :)

Do I have to concern my self much witht the extra weight of the 25 hp, or is the boat I described above well suited for it?

Definitely go with a 25 if you can swing it.

Trout

The 18/20/25 motor (same basic motors, same weight) will be the difference between planing and not. A lesser motor (9.9/15) probably won't get you out of the hole (15 might, but not by much).
