Is it a five horse ?? And who makes it Jhonson or evinrude ??

Very interesting. I don't see that model number listed. But I can tell you that it is a 1963 (36x reversed) and made by Gale Products Division of OMC. Of course OMC was also the parent company of both Johnson and Evinrude.

1963 was the last year of Gale production. It seems like they ran out of motors for Wards and imported some from Canada. That probably is what you have, with that funny model number.

If you post a picture, we can probably tell you what the horsepower is. They were offered in a single cylinder 3hp, and twin cylinder 5hp and 15hp, as well as larger ones up through the 60hp V-4. They were all very good motors and bargain priced through Wards.

Wow, F R, you're good! Looking at the pictures provided I believe you are spot-on. It looks like a Gale. Those same motors were sold in Canada through the late Eaton's department store chain under the "Viking" brand.

I'm sure that what I see in the pictures posted by twintrades is a 5-horse. Basically those are the same motors as a 5? Johnson or Evinrude from the same year as the Gale.

Too funny! You can't beat the price.

I understand why you would drag it home, but I'm sure my wife would not understand if I did the same.

Hopefully after a cleanup, some inspection and proper maintenance you will have quite a decent little motor!
