What have we become

Our present government leadership (both sides of the aisle) has cast shame across our great country. The Constitution is shredded, the bases for our country's existence and freedoms guaranteed by the founding fathers is attacked daily, we are a divided people in philosophy based on what our elected officials tell us they stand for, and in a war that we have no idea what victory means if we get there.

Our problems go on and on, but our resolve is not that difficult. It is time to clean house or say goodbye to the American Dream.

Most of us would like to see the return to times when our streets were safe, jobs were available for all at a living wage, health care was available for everyone, and we were proud of who we were, what we stood for, and where our children had to look forward to.

We must start at home and my lesson to me and my family begins each morning remembering "Who I am, and what I stand for." This is my goal and resolution to begin the new year.

Ts, I just finished a book titled "Why Government Doesn't Work" by Harry Browne. I wish I could put a copy of it every one's hands. If only we could bring the government back to the Constitution..... You should read the book, I think you would dig it.

I don't disagree with anything you've said here, but I would point out one thing. Health care is not anything like what it was back in the good ol' days. It was very, very affordable by todays standards, and it was also very primitive by today's standards. What we have done, through the mechanism of health insurance, is basically hand the medical research establishment a blank check. It just goes to show what can be accomplished with virtually unlimited funds, but it also goes to show that there are no unlimited funds---someone's got to pay the bill.

I am in agreement also with what TLCfkaSW says...government needs to be put back under control of the Constitution. What has happened to the country is that much of what the federal government does has been accomplished by the fact that the Congress can rule the District of Columbia any way it sees fit regardless of Constitutional restraint. Through trickery and manipulation, the country has been brought under the rules that apply to the governance of the District of Columbia.

I am amazed,

The greatest democracy in the world gets a huge amount of critisism, from its citizens. You guys just don't know how good you have it.

Appreciate it and be thankfull.

When last did you have 25 - 30% increases in private health care, because of subsidising AIDS healthcare for a nation?. When last did you have 18 car jackings in four blocks in 6 months, of which one is your block ..... in a good neighbourhood. When last did you pull up to your automated gates which you had to have fitted (because you are too frightened to get out of your car). When last did you have to install steel bars at each window and door to deter thieves.

Do you spend 10% of your net income on insurance against theft?

When last did you have to arm your home security system, every night, apart from having armed response that will be there in 5 min.

And you talk of shame?

We are not in the good old days any more. We are here in the present and need to cope with the present.

Come on guys, wake up and smell the roses.

Hey perhaps I am wrong, it's bedtime, let met lock and bolt all my doors, behind the steel bars. Cars securely locked in a garage with bolts on the doors apart from locks that is. Arm the alarm system ...... and i'm off to bed ... only to be awaken at 02:30 by random gunshots? I do stay in a good neighbourhood, seriously.

On my recent stay in the US I can honestly say I have yet to visit a more patriotic nation. The national pride is wonderful and brings joy to any patriotic heart. I have massive respect for all you Americans you participate in this spirit. I have yet to experience such a national pride.

Perhaps I miss the gist of your post txswinner but I think you have it good.

The American dream was never founded on negativity but on determined individuals with goals in mind, irrespective of how bleak the future seemed. The American dream is about overcoming.

Cheers
Andrew

PS: Not being American perhaps I don't understand.

Yep, remember well my Grandfather preaching the same. He was right (correct) too, as much as he lived to see the ongoing change, his vision rang true. Unfortunately you can no more slow progress/evolution than you can go back in time.

Re: What have we become

I think you have a pretty good handle on the situation Andrew.

Most Americans dont realize how good we have it here. If nothing else, the illegal immigration problem should be a good indicator. People are willing to die(literally) to get here any way possible.

I realize that the news wouldnt sell as much talking about how well the girl scouts cooky sales went this year. The constant flow of negative information can be depressing. That coupled with the fact that most Americans are unaware of the conditions most of the world survives in. What we consider 'poor' in this country would be middle class in several of the countries I have visited.

Ok, I'll hop off the soapbox now. Next

Andrew, those problems are a result of the fall of apartheid. Same thing happened in Zimbawe when the last British president fell. Just MHO.

What we don't like is the abandonment of the one thing that DID make this country great, the Constitution. JB, if you read the book I mentioned you would see how far the government has gone in flushing the restraints the Constitution put on the federal government in the last 60 years. Medicare is a perfect example.

I agree, TLC. Can't compare South Africa to America. But he does make a good point that we should be thankful with what we have here. We also need to be vigilant and safeguard it or we will lose it.

That's it I am off to the psychiatrist, I am going to buy and read TLC's book and I agree with dogsdad. I am now hopelessly lost in my morals. Maybe we aren't so far apart if we could get the crooks out of the way so our government can do what it is supposed.

FTR I work for a medical device company. We get no momey from the insurance compaNYS. We get our funding from our investors and that moneys use (for whatever R&D required to invent miricles)(sp) is directed by the board of directors. There is no blank check I assure you. If there was I would no longer worry about being layed off.
