Re: What Have I Got?

I assume it is missing the cowl or has been repainted. The HP is usually prominently displayed there. As Elvin said, there should be a model and serial # plate, unless its been removed or ground down.

BTW, if more than a few knicks in the prop, would recommend changing ASAP. Centrifical forces at high rpms might cause you some pre-mature lower unit problems.

I Have Looked All Over This Motor For Some Kind Of I.d.,found Nothing.i Am Fairly Well Experienced As A Tech.mostly On Omc And Merc But This Is My First Jap Motor.i Was Told When I Bought It That It Might Be A 20 Horse And They Thought It Was A Nissan Which I Was Able To Determine That.it Was Run In Salt Water On The South Texas Coast And The Prop Is Nicked And Worn But Has No Bends Or Breaks.

Re: What Have I Got?

It's not an 18 as they weigh 98lbs or less. It could be a 25 or 30. They vary in weight from 102 to 119 lbs. Or it could be a 40 as they were between 130 and 145 lbs.

The numbers off the carb are useless. You have to determine what you have before you can go any further.

Re: What Have I Got?

Can you post some pictures? Might help. I could tell you if it looks like an 18E or 40C. :)

For TX title you only need HP, and not a serial #?

Need to ID before talking props, but that Merc wouldn't work on my 40C/boat combo. The standard prop pitch that comes with that motor is around 11". I run props between 11" and 12" pitch.

PS: I just checked my 40C, the serial/model plate is mounted just below the cowling, behind the shift lever. I assume if yours was there, you would have found it.

Re: What Have I Got?

You might also check on the block and look for a number stamped into the powerhead somewhere. Older style motors (sounds like your is), had a 5 digit serial #. Tohatsu/Nissan stamped the 5 digit number into the powerhead. Unfortunately it's in different places on different motors so you'll just have to look all around and see if you can find a 5 digit number stamped into the metal somewhere.

And as tohatsuguru suggested, based on the weight it sounds like it could be a 40hp. How many cylinders (ie: spark plugs) does it have? Tohatsu used to make both a 2cyl. and 3cyl. version of the 40hp. If yours has 3 plugs, then that helps narrow it down.

"I Just Bought An Older Nissan Twin"

It was easy to miss. A 40D (3cyl) on a 12' jon, that would move along. For that matter, a 40C (twin) would too.

Re: What Have I Got?

I looked on the top of my 40C and found the numbers I believe you are looking at. They were not that legible given the light and my eyes. Mine has 6 numeric digits, no dash "-" or "4" in it. The digits are all "0", "6", "9", or "8", ie numbers that could be read one way or the other. Which side is up? ;)
